Welcome to the Agitation – Sedation – Delirium (ASD) Education Package for ICU Clinicians

The Agitation – Sedation – Delirium (ASD) education package is a bespoke training material that aims to equip critical care clinicians with knowledge and skills to recognise and manage effectively optimum and suboptimum sedation for the critically ill patients. The educational package was developed in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, and LearnProUK, and is available via the LearnProUK platform as a continuous professional development material for all critical care clinicians, including nursing and medical staff. Users will require their LearnProUK account details to access the material.

The ASD education package was initially developed in 2012 as an educational intervention for the purpose of the DESIST trial (Development and Evaluation of Strategies to Improve Sedation Quality in Intensive Care, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01634451). After completion of the trial, the material was reviewed, updated and re-designed to become available to all critical care clinicians in the UK as a continuous development training material.

The e-Learning Modules

The ASD education package consists of four main modules.

Understanding Sedation and Analgesia in Critical Care - which introduces the principles of optimum and sub-optimum sedation and analgesia for the critically ill patients.
Assessment of Pain, Agitation and Delirium, which emphasises on the importance of assessment of the critically ill patient to recognise symptoms of suboptimum sedation.
Managing Pain, Agitation and Delirium, which focuses on the evidence based management of sub-optimum sedation.
Commonly used agents in sedation, which concentrates on the pharmacological management of Pain, Agitation and Delirium.

Each module consists of interactive sections, and quizzes to facilitate the user’s understanding. At the end of each module, there is a quiz to help users consolidate their knowledge. In completion of all modules, the user will be asked to take a final assessment and will obtain a certificate of knowledge. The education package offers a unique opportunity for clinicians to update their existing knowledge and/ or consolidate their understanding on sedation and analgesia assessment and management in critical care.

Accessing the e-Learning modules

The e-Learning Module are accessed through learnPro.

Use the link below to go to the main learnPro page. After logging in, the programme will be available in the 'CPD' category of your learning screen, alternatively, you can find the course using the search bar by looking for 'ASD'.

I have a learnPro account already. Do I need to setup a new account to access the ASD programme?

No, you can use the account you already have. Click the 'Login' button above and use your learnPro username and password. The ASD programme will then be automatically assigned to your account.

I have logged in, but the ASD programme is not on my profile.
